Lesson One: What is Sociology?

What does society look like? Society is composed of many different aspects, including; culture, race, family, education, social class and people's interactions. In this photo, society is portrayed through an elementary school, where people share a territory (students, faculty members, etc.)
Microsociology studies face-to-face and small-group interactions to gain an understanding on how they affect the larger patterns and institutions of society. Two young ladies are having a face-to-face interaction with each other.
Bernard McGrane suggested that when using a sociological perspective, people should use a beginner's mind, which means looking at the world without biases to see things in a new light. This child has a beginner's mind because he does not have preconceptions of the world.
The glass escalator refers to men's ability to advance in female-dominated positions easily, by metaphorically moving up an escalator. This photo shows a friend and I moving down the escalator because we are female.
The glass ceiling refers to the challenges and limits that women face in male-dominated positions. This glass ceiling represents the challenges women cannot overcome in the workplace.
A social analyst studies the social world in a systematic, comprehensive, coherent, clear and consistent manner to gain scientific knowledge. Kate is studying the social world of Facebook in order to gain knowledge of daily gossip.
