Lesson Four: Culture

Material culture is shown by objects of value that someone posseses. For example nice cars and jewelery signify an upper class cultural group.

Symbolic culture embodies ways of thinking and ways of behaving. This steeple on top of a church symbolizes religion and people uniting under one belief.
A gesture is a sign that we can create with body motions such as a finger signal or a wrinkle of the eyebrow. The gesture symbolizes a reaction and it carries meaning. I am flipping off Sally and Kate which means that I am probably mad at them because they did something wrong, I chose to express myself with a gesture.
A sign is used to meaningfully represent something else. This sign represents a threat to potential shoplifters to beware.
A folkway is a norm that is not strictly forced that involves common customs or practices that reinforce a normal social interaction. In this photo Sally is holding open the door for me, she is not forced to do this but she performs this custom out of habit and politeness.
